"I felt really awkward accepting the compliments because I don't feel as if I am balancing anything, unless trying to keep my life from toppling over on top of me counts."
Someone on this blog feels awkward accepting compliments? Huh? It couldn't possibly be because we are as a group so self-critical and neurotic, or because we SO rarely actually receive any praise from our advisors and other professors/ colleagues, could it?
Salmon Ella, you should totally pat yourself on the back for doing well at this specific conference, and in general for balancing your family life and your grad school life, or at least for keeping it from toppling over on you! I think we all just deal with the family/life issues that we have to deal with because there's no other choice, and we tend to think it's not praiseworthy because we're just doing what we have to do because of the choices we've made. But what you're doing really does require balance (I for one am impressed), and I'm so glad to hear that the people you met at the conference wanted to encourage you and your husband. It really sounds to me like you were professional in a demanding situation, and I'm glad you were rewarded with a temporary end to the drama (I'm sure it will return!).
